Court Assessments

A court-ordered assessment is the outcome of a series of appointments whereby a professional counsellor spends time with each parent and the designated children. The counsellor subsequently provides the Court Assessment to the presiding judge to assist in making the best possible decision for all involved.

Parents at this stage of the proceedings may have conflicting opinions regarding where the children should live, how much time they spend with each parent, and what roles and responsibilities the parents will continue to provide on behalf of the family. Often, after reviewing the Court Assessment, families may be able to reach an agreement without the necessity of having to return to court.

Prenuptial and Cohabitation Agreements

Prenuptial and cohabitation agreements are a wise and sensible choice for those who are marrying or entering into a committed relationship for the first time or for those who are entering into a subsequent marriage or relationship. These agreements are a means of safeguarding and protecting separate property and debts and dealing with children with whom them may or may not be entering into a step-parent relationship. Wills and Estates

Everyone will, at one point or another, be touched by the inevitability of having to make a will or deal with the estate of a loved one. The laws regarding estates have been consolidated into the Wills, Estates and Succession Act. Although the Wills, Estates and Succession Act simplified some of the processes involved with making a will and distributing an estate, there remains a forest of legal processes to navigate through. Elder Law

Focusing on protection of the elderly, this area of the law involves dealing with neglect or abuse of the elderly in care facilities or by a family member and establishing financial protection for the elderly through the drafting and implementation Family Caregiving Agreements and obtaining orders for Committeeship for those who no longer have legal capacity to act for themselves.
